European Water Technology Week 2026: Connecting Global Water Tech Networks

From 26–28 October, Leeuwarden hosted European Water Technology Week (EWTW), bringing together scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers from nearly 30 countries. The event was organized by WaterCampus partners Wetsus, Water Alliance and CEW.

Day 1 – Leadership, awards & investment

Minister Vincent Karremans highlighted the importance of translating strong water tech research and innovation capabilities into scalable commercial solutions.

The opening day also celebrated outstanding innovation through three awards:

• Marcel Mulder Award – Mu Lin: Recognised for research into electrochemical CO₂ capture, with two patent applications.
• Special Marcel Mulder Award – Joris Bergman: Recognised for The Sorting Hat, an AI tool that helps researchers assess the commercial potential of innovations and identify suitable business strategies and investors.
• WIS Award – LUPER Technologies: Awarded for AirShield, a technology designed to reduce odour nuisance and harmful gas emissions at wastewater treatment plants. The public award went to Solaq, which produces drinking water from air.

On the investment front, the European Investment Fund (EIF) announced its intention to commit €30 million to PureTerra Fund II, aiming to mobilise approximately €150 million for water technology investments.

Day 2 – Science & Technology

The second day focused on scientific breakthroughs and technological applications. Topics included PFAS removal, microplastics, AI in water management, resource recovery and circular water systems. Visits to WaterCampus facilities and a pilot installation at a wastewater treatment plant demonstrated how innovations can be translated into practical applications.

Day 3 – Business & Market Impact

The final day focused on turning innovation into commercial success. Under the theme UPPstage – The Journey of Water Innovation, researchers, innovators and businesses shared experiences of developing, implementing and scaling new technologies. European regulation, international market opportunities, entrepreneurship and cross-sector collaboration were also key themes.

With 500 participants every day, this EWTW was a great succes again.
